  • No Pain Principle #4: Rebuild Capacity

The act of performing aerobic exercise directly influences our stress response. As a side effect of our increasing heart rate during exercise, our heart secretes a hormone called atrial natrieuretic peptide. When this hormone reaches the brain, it directly reduces the impact of the stress response. Additionally, aerobic exercise promotes reduced tension in your muscles, which further reduces the influence of the stress response.

In physical therapy or fitness training, our movement system must be re-educated to access new movements, and increasing aerobic capacity accelerates our ability to learn movements.

Aerobic exercise increases production of a molecule called Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) in the hippocampus, the area of the brain that influences learning and memory. This stimulates the development of new neurons in the brain and helps maintain the health of existing neurons. More neurons equals more useful connections between neurons which, in turn, promotes easier and faster learning. All of this from some simple aerobic exercise!

How hard do we need to work to see benefits in stress reduction, learning, and pain reduction? Not as hard as you may think. You can use a simple “Talk Test” to measure how hard to work (see the video below). Try to start with 15-20 minutes of activity and build from there.

  • Foundations: Building Resistance

    Foundations: Building Resistance

Webster provides us an excellent definition of resistance to lead into the All Gain Principles. Resistance is defined as the refusal to accept or comply with something; the attempt to prevent something by action or argument. I think this is an excellent representation of one of our goals as we age. We certainly can’t stop the aging process, but we can certainly refuse to submit to some of its consequences typically associated with getting older.

Research shows us that we can remain mobile and strong throughout our lives. We don’t have to succumb to the progressive loss of essential muscle mass that supports our mobility, nor do we have to gain the typical “X” pounds of fat per year that is considered the norm.

Webster also includes in his definition of resistance the ability to not be affected by something, especially adversely. Through proper program execution, we can reclaim our ability to move comfortably and effectively, and we can build a body that is resistant to the common stressors that we face a daily basis. Not only does this improve our appearance, health, and physical capabilities, but we enhance our quality of life.

Whereas resilience represents our foundation of success, it is the All Gain Principles to follow that will raise your tolerance in the battle against daily stressors, enhance your physical appearance through improved muscularity and reduced body fat, and restore the vigor you thought was lost to increasing age.

    Your All Gain Principles:

    Maintain Resilience
    Appreciate Muscle
    Manage Intensity
    Emphasize Primary Exercises
    Alternate Movements
    Modify Exercises
    Monitor Progress

I’ll expand on each of these in upcoming blogs.

Have You Had Your Neuro Coffee Today?

As you know, I’m a HUGE fan of Neuro Coffee for its brain health effects and the fact that it’s the first coffee I’ve ever liked to drink.

It seems Neuro Coffee is finally getting its just desserts (or breakfasts?) as there’s a great article in Robert Irvine Magazine.

If you’d like to read the story of how Dr. Mike Roussell created the smartest coffee in the world, you can see it in the latest issue HERE
