Q & A for The 16% – Internal Mechanics of Stealing Second Base – with Lee Taft’s Plyo Step

    Question from Justin:

I have been thinking about the mechanics of base stealing in baseball and trying to use your rethinking agility video as a reference for understanding, but I was wondering if you could clarify the pelvic floor mechanics if you’re starting from a lateral stance without a cut or change of direction preceding the acceleration?

    In this video:

We look at this question from the outside mechanics to the internal mechanics with an active demo and then a whiteboard explanation.

This includes the internal mechanics of my friend, Lee Taft’s Plyo-Step.

  • When Stretching Works… and When Stretching Fails

When Stretching Works… and When Stretching Fails

What the world needs is another video or study on stretching!

    NOT!

Here’s a perspective that may be helpful.

You’re not really changing the muscles when you’re stretching. That’s why stretching fails… thankfully! If stretching worked the way most people think, we’d be a nightmare of restrictions and extreme mobilities that we’d never be able to organize successfully.

In this video: What is the essential element to create stability or recapture movement capabilities? It’s really quite simple.

Whiteboard Session: 2 Squats and 2 Strategies

There are many representations that may pass for a squat.

Not all are created equal nor are they achieved the same way.

    Some are better than others.

    Structure matters.

    Strategy matters.

In this video: I show you two different strategies that may result in a squat below parallel. One may be better than the other. The strategy may also be influenced by structure.

  • The Intensive XII Applications are open! [Update… Apps are now closed!]

The Intensive XII Applications are open! [Update… Apps are now closed!]

    It’s time for round XII!

The Intensive XI group is already at work on their prep.

It’s time to select the next group for The Intensive XII.

Applications are already coming in at a high rate from my mentorship list, so I probably won’t be keeping them open much longer.

Only 8 professionals will be selected from the application process. Without question, keeping it small maximizes the benefits to the attendees, so I anticipate it being difficult to get it down to 8 attendees if I get many more. I want to give those not on the list a shot.

Please give thought to your answers on the application.

Several attendees have applied multiple times. Not everyone is ready right away. Sometimes you need to struggle, learn, and grow before you get to attend. It’s not about your resumé. It’s about being a thinker.

    The When and Where

The Intensive XII is April 16-19, 2020 at IFAST in Indianapolis, Indiana. We start at 8 pm on Thursday April 16th (unless you can make dinner at 6:30 at my favorite Mexican restaurant). We go until Sunday, April 19th at about noon. When we get hungry, we eat. When we get tired, we sleep.

    The Who

Up to eight (8) professionals (It is NOT for students) who:

Are comfortable with contributing ideas, asking, and answering questions.

Have an understanding of foundational movement-based anatomy and exercise/training concepts.

Want to challenge and help other professionals improve.

Understand the value of a coach and seek a learning network of individuals with common concerns, interests, and goals but different backgrounds.

Selfishly, it’s for me. I enjoy what I do, and I enjoy sharing ideas and interacting with bright, motivated people from whom I too can learn.

    The What

A fun, open, engaging, and challenging environment

Guided, focused effort over three days

    Develop a principles-based approach

Examining a model of human movement from micro to macro

Assessment processes from a passive to a dynamic environment

Cuing, coaching, decision-making, intervention strategies, and programming

Ongoing discussion and conversation over dinner at Casa de Hartman

Enhance and evolve your personal information capture and learning system

Share knowledge as part of an ongoing professional network

Follow-up mentorship to assure ongoing progress

    Train at IFAST

The eight individuals will be selected via the application process as quickly as possible. Selected attendees will be notified of acceptance by March 1st for The Intensive XII. If you are not notified by that date, you have not been selected. We get many great applications but we must limit attendance to provide the best possible experience.

    How Much?

It is $699 to attend in addition to your travel expenses. Your food is taken care of.

Application for The Intensive XII is now closed.

  • Q & A for The 16% – Hip Impingement? Should you do a “hip scour” to determine hip joint shape?

Q & A for The 16% – Hip Impingement? Should you do a “hip scour” to determine hip joint shape?

    Hey Bill,

I’ve been diving into your videos about initial assessments and measurements, and I had a quick question about your hip flexion measurement. When you’re measuring hip flexion, do you like the use of a hip scour before you test the compressive hip flexion position? I was curious if you’d change the angle of your hip flexion if an individual showed signs of impingement or a pinch sensation in the imaginary sagittal plane of testing. Would you just use the measurement of right before those issues occur? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

    Thanks!

    Paul

Do I ever use a hip scour test to determine hip joint shape?

How do I determine hip internal vs. external rotation?
