Q & A for The 16% – Best Apps for Mind Mapping Models – Quarantine Wide ISA Training

Grab your @neurocoffee and dig into today’s Q&A.

    From Charlie:
I wanted to say thanks for putting out so much awesome content lately. You really are a gift to this field. I was thinking about you the other day in regards to your videos on drawing out your model and organizing things as you have done with note cards, etc. Although I certainly appreciate your analog approach, for those of us that gravitate towards more digital organization systems, I thought I would share two mind mapping platforms that I have found helpful: XMind and Mindomo. I have used both, but seem to be gravitating more towards Mindomo. You can create a topic, add subtopics, input articles, links, etc. At any rate, I thought those resources might be helpful for you our your students/padawans who need a way to map out their model.

    From Reggie:
I appreciate all the great content you’ve been posting lately. My question is a “quarantine edition” one given that I’m looking for helpful wide ISA moves that can be done at home with limited equipment (dumbbell pairs ranging from 2-10 lbs; one 25 lb dumbbell; one 25 lb kettlebell; pads/books; weighted bands). I’m specifically looking for useful moves for the lower posterior thorax region, and then for the upper thorax. It seems that helpful moves involve unilateral movement with some rotational forces at play. I can see how this is done with a landmine press, or with a cable machine at a gym. With or without free weights, however? I’m struggling a bit here and would love to get your input.

  • Q & A for The 16% – Will Wide Infrasternal Angles Benefit from Side Plank or Inversion?

Q & A for The 16% – Will Wide Infrasternal Angles Benefit from Side Plank or Inversion?

    Grab your @neurocoffee for this morning’s Q & A for The 16%…

    From Michael:
I’ve heard you say that you would side plank a wide ISA. Can you go into detail about why  and what effect it has on the ribcage?  Also, can you give some side plank examples you would use? Progressions, regressions?

    From Rondel:
I asked a question about expansion in the upper thorax [on the IFAST U Q & A], and I would like to get clarification, if possible. Let me know if I got this correct.  Wide: Face-up: what exercises specifically?  Narrow: Facedown: what exercises specifically?

    From Sasha:
I do have a question pertaining to the shoulder going into extension being an external rotation moment, unless you are reaching across the midline. Would that fly in the face of what is commonly taught? Have an outstanding day!

  • Q & A for The 16% – Heavy Presses, Chin-ups, and Suspension Trainers to Increase Mobility?

Q & A for The 16% – Heavy Presses, Chin-ups, and Suspension Trainers to Increase Mobility?

    Grab your @neurocoffee and have a listen to todays Q & A.

    From Thomas:
In your Q and A from November 3rd someone wrote in who was trying to reestablish eccentric orientation. He noted he was trying not to focus on compressive exercises like deadlift and bench and was trying to focus on exercises like chin-ups and presses. You mentioned that the chin and presses were actually compressive because of their bilateral nature. Are there variations of those exercises(chins/presses) one could use to try to recapture eccentric orientation? Im guessing the examples you performed in the expanding the upper rib cage video would help someone with a wide isa reestablish eccentric orientation but was wondering what some other options could be?

    From Shyam:
Can you talk about the  power push-up rotating handle and how one can bias shoulder IR and ER improvements? Also would this be similar  to using rings for pull-ups and how you could manipulate breathing with supination/Er and pronation/Ir to get expansion and shoulder range changes?

  • Q & A for The 16% – Hip External rotation solution – Rib stiffness strategy – Hand to Shoulder ER/IR

Q & A for The 16% – Hip External rotation solution – Rib stiffness strategy – Hand to Shoulder ER/IR

    I hope you made your @neurocoffee because I have 3 great Q & A’s for today.

    From Eduard:
How do you distinguish between the genetically determined structure of being an narrow vs. wide and a body that starts for example as a wide and does tons of compressive hardcore weight and in result ends up as a narrow with excessive external obliques and now has to deal with that. 2 or even 3 layers of compensation on compensation overhelming this body. Would you still start with moving ISA first and then get the counternutation of the sakrum and the upper T spine going?

    From Brian:
If someone exhibits a narrow ISA with an excessive lumbar lordosis and limited hip ER,  would a good strategy to improve the hip ER measures  be to work on activities to improve lower posterior thorax expansion to reduce the lordosis which is driving the anterior pelvis orientation ?

    From Matt:
I saw your recent tricep push down video and noticed you say to push through the pinky side of your hands. I was wondering why this is, and how pressing through different parts of your hand can have different influences on the rest of the body. Is it at all similar to pressing through different aspects of your foot?

    From Zhang:
Could you clarify the terminology describing the different regions of the posterior ribcage? Is the posterior ribcage divided into 3 areas, please correct me if I was wrong, as below:  – Posterior lower thorax – Dorsal rostral area – Upper dorsal rostral area What shoulder test would you use to identify the location of compression at the posterior ribcage?

    From Marcos:
One question I’ve been wrestling with: what role does the neck muscles play in exhalation? Specifically, does depression of the adam’s apple or recruitment of the muscles at the back of the tongue promote better exhalation mechanics? My guess is that they promote a better head position, which affects breathing, but I wanted to get your thoughts.
